UEFA Champions League History

The UCL was introduced in 1955 as European Champion Clubs’ Cup, AKA European Cup. But in 1992, it changed its name to UEFA Champions League which is still what it’s called to date.

When the competition first started it was designed to be a straight knockout tournament. And at that time it was only the champions of Europe’s domestic leagues that participated.

The first 16 teams that competed in the Champions League during the 1955–56 season include Vörös Lobogó (Hungary), Stade de Reims (France), Sporting CP (Portugal), Servette (Switzerland), Saarbrücken (Saar), Rot-Weiss Essen (West Germany), Real Madrid (Spain), Rapid Wien (Austria), Partizan (Yugoslavia), PSV Eindhoven (Netherlands), Hibernian (Scotland), Gwardia Warszawa (Poland), Djurgården (Sweden), Anderlecht (Belgium), AGF Aarhus (Denmark), AC Milan (Italy).

But from the 1997–1998 season, certain countries were allowed to join in the competition. It has however since then allowed more teams to participate to accommodate 32 teams.

João Baptista Martins scored the first goal in Champions League history when he played for Sporting CP.

English Teams That Have Won The Champions League

How many English teams have won the Champions League so far? There are five English teams with the most Champions League trophies in the competition’s history. The obvious next question will be which five English teams have won the Champions League, right?

Here they are Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa.

Liverpool are the most successful, winning the trophy six times, while Manchester United are the second most successful English club, winning the title three times.

Let me do a simple breakdown for you.

Liverpool with 6 wins and 9 finals appearance

  • 1976–77 season: 3–1 Moenchengladbach
  • 1977–78 season: 1–0 Club Brugge
  • 1980–81 season: 1–0 Real Madrid
  • 1983–84 season: 1–1(4–2 PK) Roma
  • 2004–05 season: 3–3 (3–2 PK) AC Milan
  • 2018–19 season: 2–0 Tottenham

Meanwhile, Liverpool lost 1–0 to Juventus (1984–85), 2–1 against AC Milan (2006–07) and 3–1 versus Real Madrid (2017–18).

  • 1967-68 season: 4–1 Benfica
  • 1998–99 season: 2–1 Bayern Munich
  • 2007–08 season: 1–1 (6–5 PK) Chelsea

They had their two losses against Barcelona 2–0 (2008–09) and in 2010–11 against Barcelona again 3–1.

Nottingham Forest with 2 wins in their 2 finals appearance

  • 1978–79 season: 1–0 Malmo
  • 1979–80 season: 1–0 Hamburg

Chelsea with 2 wins from 3 finals appearance

  • 2011–12 season: 1–1 (4–3 PK) Bayern Munich
  • 2020-21 season: 1-0 Man City

They lost once to Man Utd 1–1 (6–5 PK) in the 2007–08 season.

Aston Villa with just 1 win from their only final

  • 1981–82 season: 1–0 Bayern Munich

Hope you noticed that Manchester United was the first English team to have won the Champions League title in 1968, beating Benfica 4–1?

And by the way, there are three English clubs that have reached the UCL final but never won it. They were Leeds United (1975 where they lost to Bayern Munich), Arsenal (2006 where they also lost to Barcelona) and Tottenham Hotspur (2019 where they failed against Liverpool).

Those are all the English teams that have won the Champions League.
