U-20 World Cup: Flying Eagles Stun Argentina To Reach Quarter-Finals

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles recorded a stunning 2-0 victory against hosts Argentina to book a spot in the quarter-finals at the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup.

Ladan Bosso’s boys started the game brightly but Argentina later took control of proceedings.

Javier Mascherano’s side carved out a number of chances but were unable to find a way past Nigeria goalkeeper, Chijioke Aniagboso.

Haliru Sarki and Emmanuel Umeh replaced Jude Sunday and Salim Fago early in the second half.

The double substitutions paid off with Ibahim Muhammad firing home the curtain raiser just after the hour.

Substitute Umeh flicked the ball over the top for Muhammad, who stabbed it past goalkeeper Federico Gomes Gerth.

The Argentines poured forward in search of the equaliser and came agonisingly close when Luka Romero’s low drive struck the inside of the post.

Sarki scored a late header to make it 2-0 for the Flying Eagles.

The West Africans will now face the winners of Ecuador versus Korea Republic tie in the quarter-finals in Santiago del Estero on Sunday.
