Newcastle United could see several of their players representing England in Euro 2024 this summer, thanks to a potential rule change by UEFA. According to Sky Sports, squads for the tournament are set to be increased from 23 to 26 players, which would be a welcome boost for outfield players on the fringes of the squads.
One player who stands to benefit from this rule change is Anthony Gordon. The Newcastle United player’s hopes of earning an England call-up have received a major boost. Gordon was called up by Gareth Southgate last month and earned his first two senior England caps in matches against Brazil and Belgium.
He was the only representative from Newcastle in the England squad at the time, as Kieran Trippier, Nick Pope, and Callum Wilson were all unavailable due to injury.
While Trippier is expected to return to fitness and likely to be named in the England squad, there is uncertainty surrounding Wilson and Pope. Both players participated in England’s last major tournament in 2022 but have been absent from recent squads due to injury.
Wilson is nearing a return after being out for two months with a pectoral injury, while Pope hasn’t played since early December due to a dislocated shoulder. The rule changes won’t impact Pope, as England will call up three goalkeepers regardless.
However, the additional three places in the squad give Wilson renewed hope of making the cut. Currently behind Harry Kane, Ollie Watkins, and Ivan Toney in the pecking order, Wilson’s chances may improve if any of these players drop out due to injury or if he ends the season strongly.
