Pre-season: Kano Pillars Emerge Champions Of Presidential Cup

Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) side Kano Pillars were crowned Champions of the maiden Presidential Pre-season Cup in Abuja on Sunday.

The tourney that was held at the newly renovated Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, saw Sai Masu Gida held league Champions Akwa United to a 1-1 draw on the final day to emerge winner.

Bassey opened scoring for Akwa United in the 23rd minutes as they look poised to run away with a victory, however, Koko Udoh got the equaliser for Pillars in the 86th minute to share the spoils at the end of the game.

The draw meant Sai Masu Gida earned seven points after recording two wins and a draw to edge other invited teams including Sunshine Stars, Lobi Stars and Akwa United.

Coach Ibrahim Musa speaking to the media after the tourney said: “We are very happy to have emerged winner of this tournament which is also very good for the team in terms of our preparation for the league season proper.”

“The tournament has indeed afforded us the opportunity of seeing all strengths as well as our weakness.”

“So we will go back and correct all our mistakes ahead of our first game. Incidentally, we play against the same opposition we faced today and winning them has given us a psychological edge ahead of the match day encounter.”

While Pillars has been crowned Champions in the competition, Sunshine Stars of Akure finished second with six points after losing 1-3 to Kano Pillars, before two consecutive wins over Akwa and Lobi Stars.
