Former Ajax and Netherlands winger Quincy Promes has been sentenced to six years in prison for his involvement in smuggling cocaine.

The 32-year-old footballer was charged in May last year for importing two shipments of cocaine, totaling 1,350 kilograms, which were intercepted in Antwerp in January 2020.

Promes was found guilty of importing, exporting, transporting, and possessing the drugs, which were allegedly hidden in a shipment of sea salt from Brazil.

Prosecutors were initially seeking a nine-year jail term, but it was ultimately reduced to six years.

Despite the verdict, Promes has not attended any of his court dates and reportedly believes he is “untouchable” as he continues to play for Spartak Moscow in Russia.

In addition to the drug-related charges, Promes was also sentenced to 18 months behind bars for stabbing his cousin last year.

However, due to the lack of an extradition treaty between the Netherlands and Russia, he has not served any prison time.

Dutch officials are perplexed by how a successful footballer like Promes could become involved in the illegal drug trade, which they believe he “normalizes and almost romanticizes.”

It is suggested that Promes’ wealth played a role in his ascent within the criminal organization, as he had significant funds to invest.

Police partially exposed his involvement by placing audio-monitoring equipment in his car.

Promes, who has also played for Twente, La Liga side Sevilla, and earned 50 caps for the Netherlands, recently played a full 90 minutes in Spartak’s 5-0 friendly win against Al-Ahli in Abu Dhabi.
