Akwa United head coach, Ayodeji Ayeni has reiterated that his team has a fifty-fifty percent chance of securing a playoff ticket in Group A of the 2022-23 Nigeria Premier Football League season.

With the NPFL regular season coming to end this weekend, Akwa United are 4th in Group A with 29 points from 17 games. Bendel Insurance stay top with 33 points, followed by Enyimba on 31 points and Remo Stars are third with 30 points from the same number of matches.

Ahead of their last game of the season away to Gombe United on Sunday, Coach Ayeni revealed that his team will approach the game as a cup final.

“The final standings in Group A league table will be determined after the last round of matches on Sunday. With this scenario, I can say that we have a 50-50 chance and we are very much hopeful of picking one of the playoff tickets.

“The task before us is to ensure we approach our match with Gombe United as a cup final and with a winning mentality. We know that it won’t be an easy game for both teams but we are fully prepared to give it our best shot on Sunday.

“If we must achieve our target this season, this is a match we have to win while also hoping that other results will be in our favour. The season has been very tough and competitive with so many shocking results and we believe that the drama will continue this weekend “.

The Promise Keepers will be motivated by their impressive record against Gombe United in Nigeria top flight football. The 2021 champions have recorded seven victories and three draws with three loses against Gombe United in their 13 previous meetings in the NPFL.

Akwa United will be aiming to improve on their away form this season which comprises one win, four draws and three defeats when they file out at the Pantami stadium- a venue they have not lost a match in their three previous visits.

Victory for coach Ayodeji Ayeni’s team will move them to 32 points as they will be monitoring the results of Remo Stars versus Kwara United and Shooting Stars versus Enyimba matches.

All matches are scheduled to kickoff at four O’clock in the afternoon and there will be live updates on all Akwa United social media platforms.
