Rigobert Song, the former Cameroon international and head coach of the national team, has decided to leave his position, according to the president of the Cameroonian football federation (Fecafoot), Samuel Eto’o.
This announcement comes after Cameroon’s disappointing exit from the Africa Cup of Nations in the last 16, where they were defeated by eventual runners-up Nigeria.
Eto’o stated that the team did not meet their objectives, leading the executive committee and himself to decide against renewing Song’s contract.
Song, who was appointed as the Cameroon boss in February 2022, played a crucial role in guiding the Indomitable Lions to a dramatic play-off victory over Algeria, securing their qualification for the upcoming Qatar World Cup.
However, despite a surprise victory over Brazil in their final group stage match, Cameroon failed to progress beyond the group stage. Eto’o acknowledged Song’s contributions to the team, but emphasized the need to focus on the future.
During Song’s tenure, the former Liverpool midfielder managed to secure only six wins out of 23 matches in charge.
As Cameroon looks ahead, the search for a new head coach will begin.
