The FIFA Women’s World Cup is set to expand to 48 national teams beginning with the 2031 edition. This marks a major increase from the current 32-team format used in the previous tournaments.

The decision was announced by FIFA’s governing council and comes after the successful 2023 tournament co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, according to a report by CGTN Sports Scene. Spain won that edition, with England finishing as runners-up.

The expanded format will feature 12 groups, increasing the number of total matches to 104 and extending the tournament duration by an additional week. The 2027 event in Brazil will still host 32 teams.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino shared his support for the change, stating:

“The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023, the first in which teams from all confederations won at least one game and teams from five confederations reached the knockout stage, among many other records, set a new standard for global competitiveness.”

The host nation for the 2031 tournament is expected to be the United States, currently the sole bidder. The United Kingdom has submitted a proposal to host the 2035 edition.

The men’s World Cup will also expand to 48 teams starting with the 2026 event across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
