S’Eagles Coach Peseiro Reflects on Semi-Final Victory, Injury Concerns Ahead of AFCON Final

The Super Eagles’ head coach, Jose Peseiro, has expressed the difficulties his team faced during their 2023 AFCON semi-final clash against South Africa on Wednesday, February 7.

Throughout the game, the Super Eagles found themselves under pressure from Bafana Bafana, with goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali making crucial saves to keep Nigeria in the match.

In the second half, South Africa continued to threaten Nigeria’s defense, and the Eagles struggled to create scoring opportunities until the 65th minute.

After taking the lead from a penalty in the 67th minute, the Super Eagles gained confidence and began to pose a threat to their opponent’s defense.

However, their spirits were dampened when Victor Osimhen’s goal was overturned by VAR, and South Africa equalized with a penalty kick.

The Eagles had to defend deeper until the game ended. Fortunately, Nigeria emerged victorious in the penalty shootout and advanced to the 2023 AFCON final.

Reflecting on the match, coach Jose Peseiro acknowledged the team’s struggles during the game but praised their ability to regroup during the break before extra time, which boosted their confidence.

Looking ahead to the final, Peseiro revealed that Porto left-back Zaidu Sanusi may not be available due to fitness concerns.

Sanusi was unable to play against South Africa and was replaced by Bright Osayi-Samuel. Peseiro expressed uncertainty about Sanusi’s recovery and stated that the player had not been able to participate in training recently.

The Super Eagles will now face the hosts of the 2023 AFCON, Ivory Coast, in the final of the tournament on Sunday, February 11, at 9 p.m.
