Nigeria and Benin played out a 1-1 draw in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualification Group D match at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny on Thursday.
Benin took the lead in the 17th minute when Mohamed Tijani latched onto a well-placed cross from Junior Olaitan to head the ball past Nigerian goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.
Nigeria had a golden opportunity to equalize in the 42nd minute when Victor Osimhen missed a header from close range following a precise cross by Bruno Onyemaechi.
Both teams were active after the break, with Benin’s Junior Olaitan failing to beat Nwabali in the 62nd minute, and Onyemaechi hitting the post at the other end.
Nigeria finally found an equalizer in the 81st minute when Osimhen redeemed himself by heading home a superb cross from substitute Moses Simon.
The result meant Benin remained second in the group, still in contention for qualification.
They will secure their place in the AFCON finals with a win over Libya on November 18.
Meanwhile Nigeria, the draw ensured Nigeria’s top spot in Group D, maintaining a four-point lead at the top.
