Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu has confirmed Francisca Ordega’s surprise return to the national team ahead of their key friendly match against Cameroon.
The experienced forward is set for her first international game since Nigeria’s World Cup quarterfinal loss to England in 2023, according to report. Her return brings an end to a nearly two-year absence from the national squad.
Despite missing recent Olympic qualifiers and WAFCON preliminaries, Ordega has maintained an impressive run at club level. The 31-year-old scored 19 goals across her final two seasons in Russia and currently plays for Al Ittihad in the Saudi Women’s Premier League. Since joining the club in January, she has already netted six times in just seven appearances.
Coach Madugu explained that her strong form and wealth of experience made her return inevitable.
“We feel with the experience she has gathered over the years and her current performances also in her clubs, I think she deserves to be given an opportunity,” Madugu told NFF media.
Originally expected to face Cameroon over two legs, the Super Falcons will now play only one fixture due to travel delays experienced by the Indomitable Lionesses. The revised match will take place on Monday, June 2, at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta.
The game is part of Nigeria’s final preparations for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), which runs from July 5 to 26 in Morocco. The Super Falcons have been drawn in Group C and will face Tunisia, Botswana, and Algeria.
With Ordega’s return adding leadership and firepower, Nigeria aims to build momentum going into a tournament they’ve won nine times.
