Gary Neville has criticized the Premier League for acting like “bullies” in response to the proposed Football Governance Bill, which aims to establish an independent football regulator.
The bill, supported by the Labour government, seeks to protect clubs and ensure financial sustainability following the European Super League controversy of 2021.
Neville firmly believes that this measure would protect the interests of fans, stating, “the introduction [of a regulator] would safeguard the interests of English football fans throughout the pyramid.”
He condemned the Premier League’s approach, accusing them of selfishness and trying to manipulate the regulator, describing the league’s stance as entitled and suggesting that they use influence to create scare stories about regulation.
In response to Neville’s accusations, Premier League CEO Richard Masters warned that the regulation could harm the league’s global appeal and competitiveness.
He argued that the introduction of red tape could reduce investment and disrupt the league’s delicate financial balance, potentially weakening its position as the world’s most popular football competition.
Meanwhile, Labour’s Culture, Media, and Sport Secretary, Lisa Nandy, dismissed claims that UEFA could bar clubs from competitions due to state interference as “ridiculous” and emphasized the government’s aim for sustainability, without heavy-handed tactics.
