Kevin Strootman has officially retired from professional football at the age of 34.

The former Netherlands international, who earned 46 caps for his country, announced his retirement via social media, stating simply, “Careers come to an end. Thank you football!”

Strootman began his career at Sparta Rotterdam in the Eredivisie, where he made 84 appearances before moving to Utrecht.

His time at PSV Eindhoven was marked by success, as he won both the KNVB Cup and the Super Cup.

However, his standout years were spent at AS Roma, where he played 131 matches over five seasons and established himself as a key player.

Following his time in Italy, he had stints with Marseille and most recently, Genoa and Cagliari.

Strootman made his debut for the Dutch national team in 2011 during a friendly match against Austria.

Over the years, he developed into a key figure for Oranje, appearing in 46 matches.

His contributions to the national team will leave a lasting legacy.

As he said in his brief retirement announcement, ‘careers come to an end. Thank you football!’
