Expulsion from Premier League Looms for Chelsea and Manchester City

Chelsea and Manchester City are facing the possibility of expulsion from the Premier League if they are found guilty of breaching Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations.

This comes in the wake of Nottingham Forest being punished with a four-point deduction for their own breaches of profit and sustainability rules.

Nottingham Forest has been accused of exceeding their PSR threshold by up to £34.5 million during the relevant period.

As a result, Nuno Espirito Santo’s men have dropped into the relegation zone, currently sitting in 18th place with 21 points.

Meanwhile, Manchester City is awaiting the outcome of 115 charges brought against them by the Premier League since the beginning of last year.

Although a trial date has been set, it has yet to be officially confirmed.

Chelsea, on the other hand, has not yet been charged, but concerns have been raised about potential punishment due to their significant spending since being taken over by Todd Boehly in May 2022, amounting to over £1 billion.

The recent warning from the independent commission that punished Nottingham Forest spells trouble for both Manchester City and Chelsea. The commission, consisting of Robert Glancy KC, Mark Hovell, and Steve Holt, stated that the range of sanctions for breaching FFP regulations could extend from a warning to expulsion from the Premier League.

In their 52-page document, the commission further explained that if a breach is considered “minor,” other commissions would determine if a points deduction is necessary.

However, if the breach is deemed “major,” even severe sanctions such as expulsion may be deemed appropriate.
