Former Nigerian international footballer Segun George Hunkarin has been arrested by the NDLEA over his alleged role in a drug trafficking operation, IsaGoal can report.
Hunkarin was taken into custody at the car park of Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport after NDLEA officers intercepted 800 grams of cocaine concealed in the carry-on luggage of a passenger, Ntoruka Emmanuel Chinedu.
Chinedu, who arrived from Turkey via Addis Ababa on an Ethiopian Airlines flight, had 37 wraps of cocaine reportedly handed to him during transit.
The NDLEA said Hunkarin was at the airport to collect the illicit consignment and was promptly tracked and arrested.
“Hunkarin, who had stayed for years in Brazil playing for football clubs, was promptly tracked and arrested at the car park,” NDLEA stated.
In his confession, Hunkarin admitted to transporting drugs twice in the past—from Brazil to Ethiopia—but denied ever bringing drugs into Nigeria.
Authorities revealed the total seizure from operations at Lagos and Enugu airports reached 22.6 kilograms of cocaine and methamphetamine.
In a separate incident, Europe-based freight agent Amen Okoro Godstime was caught on June 27 at the Lagos airport attempting to smuggle 5,000 pills of Tramadol.
The pills were disguised inside malaria medication packs including Lonart, Amatem, and Aluktem.
Godstime admitted he planned to ship the drugs to Italy via France for resale.
NDLEA officials have confirmed ongoing investigations as they intensify their crackdown on cross-border drug trafficking rings.
