Antoine Griezmann has announced his retirement from international football just as France’s next squad was about to be revealed.

The 33-year-old forward ends a remarkable international career spanning a decade, with 137 caps and 44 goals to his name.

Griezmann has been a key player for France throughout his career, playing pivotal roles in their triumph at the 2018 World Cup and their runs to the finals of Euro 2016 and the 2022 World Cup.

However, his recent exclusion from Didier Deschamps’ starting lineup, beginning with the Euro 2024 semifinal loss to Spain and continued in the September Nations League games, marked a turning point.

With 137 international appearances, Griezmann is level with Olivier Giroud and remains just behind legends like Lilian Thuram and Hugo Lloris.

In terms of scoring, only a few, including Giroud and Thierry Henry, surpass his tally.

His retirement will undoubtedly be a major loss for France as they look ahead to future competitions, particularly the 2026 World Cup.

However, this decision may afford Griezmann the much-needed rest during international breaks, benefiting Atlético Madrid as they continue their campaign in La Liga.
