The 2021 shortlist for BBC African Sports Personality of the year award has been announced and Chelsea’s goalkeeper Edouard Mendy makes the list.
The six contenders for the accolade were chosen by a panel of journalists from Africa and United Kingdom.
The panel selected the shortlist based on the best African sporting achievements on the international stage in 2021 between January and September, and among those selected the former Rennes goalie Mendy makes the list deservedly.
While the criteria to select the athletes on the list is about their achievements on the international stage in 2021, their personal achievements beyond their particular sport was also taken into account in selecting them.
The nominees on the list are Edouard Mendy of Chelsea (football), Eliud Kipchoge (athletics), Faith Kipyegon (athletics), Ntando Mahlangu (para athletics), Christine Mboma (athletics) and Tatjana Schoenmaker (swimming).
The voting for the award has already commenced and is to close on December 19, 2021 while the winner of the accolade is to be announced on January 7, 2021.
