Following Argentina‘s 2-1 defeat against Colombia in a World Cup qualifier, goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez faced backlash regarding an altercation with a cameraman.
After the final whistle, Martinez was seen slapping away a camera, resulting in the operator, Jhonny Jackson, falling to the ground.
Jackson, speaking to Colombian media, expressed his frustration, saying, ‘Out of the blue he slapped me,’ Jackson told RCN Deportes.
‘I was working, just like he was. He was playing and I was shooting with my camera.’
Asked to send a message to Golden Glove winner, he added: ‘Dibu, my brother, how are you? I am Jhonny Jackson, the cameraman you assaulted in the match against Colombia’.
‘I wanted to tell you it is all good, my brother. Everyone has lost a match in their life. This defeat clearly meant a lot to you. But look ahead, Dibu.’
Colombia’s association of sports journalists, ACORD, condemned Martínez’s actions, calling it an “attack on freedom of expression.”
ACORD’s president, Faiver Hoyos Hernández, demanded that FIFA impose an exemplary sanction on the 32-year-old, stating that Martínez’s behavior is not reflective of the conduct expected from role models.
ACORD urged the Colombian Football Federation to raise the issue with CONMEBOL, the Argentine Football Association (AFA), and FIFA.
Neither Argentina’s national team nor CONMEBOL has commented on the incident.
Despite this, Martínez is expected to return to action for Aston Villa’s Premier League fixture against Everton on Saturday.
