Colombia avenged their Copa America final defeat with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Argentina during the South American qualifying round for the 2026 World Cup.

Playing in front of a passionate crowd at Barranquilla’s Metropolitano Stadium, Colombia took the lead in the 25th minute when James Rodriguez chipped a cross to Yerson Mosquera, who headed home at the far post.

Argentina equalized early in the second half when Nicolas Gonzalez capitalized on a misplaced pass from Rodriguez, racing forward to beat Colombian goalkeeper Camilo Vargas.

The decisive moment came in the 60th minute when Nicolas Otamendi’s reckless challenge on Daniel Munoz led to a VAR review, resulting in a penalty for Colombia.

Rodriguez calmly converted, sending Argentina‘s Emiliano Martinez the wrong way to restore Colombia’s lead.

Colombia nearly extended their lead when Jhon Duran found himself unmarked in the box but shot straight at Martinez.

Despite the missed chance, Colombia held on for the win, moving into second place in South American qualifying with 16 points from eight games, just two points behind leaders Argentina.

Rodriguez expressed his elation at finally finding the net against such a formidable opponent. “I don’t think I’ve ever scored against them, there’s a first time for everything. We want to get used to playing finals. Today was just another game, but against a team that has won everything, this victory tastes even better.”
