Ifeanyi Onyedika, a member of Nigeria’s 1980 AFCON-winning squad, has expressed shock at the passing of Christian Chukwu. The two shared a close bond during their playing days at both the national level and Rangers International Football Club.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Chukwu passed away on Saturday in Enugu following a prolonged illness. Onyedika, clearly shaken, said he had just learned of the news after his team, Abakaliki FC, finished a home match.
He described Chukwu—fondly called “Chairman”—as a powerful figure both on and off the field. Onyedika added that the former Super Eagles captain was the kind of man “you will wish to stay with forever.”
Chukwu’s contributions to Nigerian football stretch across decades, touching lives through coaching, mentorship, and leadership. Onyedika called him irreplaceable, saying, “Chukwu is simply irreplaceable as his contributions to the growth of Nigerian and African football cannot be quantified.”
Meanwhile, Wilson Mmayie, a former Golden Eaglet, recalled Chukwu’s time managing the Kenyan national team, the Harambee Stars. He said Chukwu’s presence in Kenya left a lasting impact and earned him admiration beyond Nigeria.
Chukwu’s influence, both in his homeland and across Africa, will remain part of football’s story for years to come.
