Manchester United’s choice to part ways with David De Gea has come under renewed scrutiny amid growing issues in the club’s goalkeeping department.
According to Mirror Football, frustration among fans and pundits has intensified as United now sit 14th in the Premier League table, following a dismal 4-1 defeat at the hands of Newcastle United.
De Gea left Old Trafford in July 2023 after 12 years at the club, reportedly due to a contract standoff. Although he was open to a pay cut, his £375,000-a-week salary became a sticking point. United chose not to renew his deal—an outcome that’s proving costly.
Andre Onana, signed to replace De Gea, has struggled. Manager Ruben Amorim dropped him completely from the squad against Newcastle, opting instead for Turkish keeper Altay Bayindir. That change, however, didn’t help much. Bayindir was at fault for Newcastle’s fourth goal and conceded four of six shots on target.
The decision to let De Gea go “for nothing” has now been criticised by his former teammate Jack Butland. Speaking on Ben Foster’s Fozcast podcast, Butland said:
“Can he keep the ball out of the net? Oh my god! Sometimes he made a save that no one else could make. You can’t put a price on that.”
Butland played with De Gea during a loan spell in the second half of the 2022-23 season. He praised the Spaniard’s ability to make match-winning saves despite sometimes appearing laid-back in training. Butland recalled moments when De Gea would casually avoid shots during practice, only to transform on match day into what he described as a “monster.”
Now playing for Fiorentina, De Gea is still showcasing the shot-stopping skills that made him a fan favourite in Manchester. Meanwhile, United’s decision to let him go—without securing a reliable successor—continues to backfire.
Fans and former players are calling for urgent change, especially with rumours swirling about potential interest in Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale as a new target.
With performances worsening under Amorim, United’s choices in the transfer market are under the microscope—starting with that “nuts” decision to lose one of their most experienced players between the posts.
