Birmingham coach responds to talk of Akpom hijacked loan deal from Ajax

Chuba Akpom was expected to join Birmingham, but last-minute interest from Ipswich has sparked a shift—and head coach Chris Davies isn’t dodging the conversation

Birmingham City manager Chris Davies addressed the Chuba Akpom rumours head-on, keeping it respectful but clear that the club is focused elsewhere – www.isagoal.com reports.

Complete Sports noted that Akpom was initially in line for a loan move to Birmingham, but Ipswich Town are now closing in on a deal with Ajax for the forward.

Davies didn’t deny the interest but kept it professional: “He’s a player we know, a good player absolutely, but not someone I can go into specifics on.”

He made it clear that they’re not chasing shadows and won’t dwell on players who aren’t available.

“There’s always a lot of moving parts when you’re looking to bring players in,” Davies added during the press conference.

The timing is tight, with Birmingham set to face Ipswich in their Championship opener – an ironic twist in the Akpom saga.

Ajax own Akpom’s contract, and Davies was firm in maintaining respect for that relationship despite the ongoing noise.

“We’ve been pretty clear all along about the players that we really want,” he said, reaffirming Birmingham’s recruitment strategy.

Akpom had a mixed 2024/25 season and now looks set to return to English football after spells in the Netherlands and France.

If the Ipswich deal wraps up, Akpom could be facing Birmingham on the pitch rather than joining them in the dressing room.
