Barcelona’s Financial Struggles Intensify with Decreasing Squad Cost Limits

Barcelona has long been grappling with financial difficulties, hindering their ability to compete with other top European clubs in the transfer market.

In a further blow, La Liga recently announced a reduction in the squad cost limits for first division clubs, with Barcelona’s limit dropping from €270 million to €204 million.

Reports has identified several key factors that contributed to this decrease.

Since September of last year, Barcelona had been operating with a budget of €270 million.

However, while maintaining their wage costs, the club incurred more expenses than the income they generated.

Although this accounting issue is included in the books for the 2022-23 season, it still affects the club’s spending limits for the upcoming season.

The arrival of Vitor Roque, who was signed due to Gavi’s injury and subsequent contract suspension, will not impact the squad cost limit.

However, the final limit for Barcelona’s summer market activities will only be determined in May when the club submits its treasury plan to the league authorities.

Currently, Barcelona remains bound by the 50% rule rather than the normal 1:1 ratio.

This means that they can only utilize 50% of the proceeds from player sales for registering new players.

To improve their financial situation, Barcelona could greatly benefit from receiving the outstanding amounts from the sale of Barca Studios.

By obtaining the remaining €40 million, they can align with La Liga’s calculation of the salary limit for the club.

To navigate these constraints, the club must find ways to reduce their €200 million deficit and explore opportunities to boost their revenue.

Only then can they regain the financial stability necessary to compete on equal footing with their European counterparts in the transfer market.
