Awoniyi relishes Super Eagles debut

Super Eagles and Union Berlin striker, Taiwo Awoniyi, is still in high heavens after making his senior national team debut against Central African Republic in Lagos.

Awoniyi was brought invited by Gernot Rohr to replace Leicester City’s Kelechi Iheanacho in the second half as the Super Eagles searched for an opener against the Wild Beasts.

Karl Namnganda’s solitary strike in the final minutes of the tie gave Central African Republic, who were ranked 112th by FIFA a famous and shocking victory on the Nigerian soil.

According to Awoniyi, it’s a day that will always be remembered.

“To be honest, it’s something I can’t describe,” Awoniyi told ESPN in a video interview.

“In Nigeria, with how big the country is, I always said the privilege of wearing the green and white jersey is something one should be proud of.”

“The moment you wear the jersey you should also understand that’s an honour and a privilege because this is a country with a lot of talents. You are there not because you are better than others; every Nigerian player knows this.”

“So, for me to be called up, it’s something I’ve been grateful to God about. I was happy. The only thing you need as an individual is belief in your goals, keep working hard and be patient; everything else will come. This motivates me the more.” He concluded.
