Liverpool football club has reportedly reached out to Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso to discuss the possibility of him succeeding Jurgen Klopp as the club’s next manager.

Klopp recently announced that he would be stepping down from his position at the end of the season, leaving a void that Liverpool is keen to fill.

Alonso, who spent five years as a player at Liverpool between 2004 and 2009, has emerged as the frontrunner for the managerial role.

During his 16-month tenure at Bayer Leverkusen, he has elevated the team’s performance from mid-table strugglers to title contenders in the Bundesliga.

Under Alonso, Leverkusen has enjoyed a remarkable 30-game unbeaten run this season, the second-longest in German football history.

Recent reports suggest that Liverpool has made contact with him to gauge his interest before approaching Leverkusen.

It has been previously rumored that Alonso has a clause in his contract allowing him to join any of his former clubs, including Liverpool, Real Madrid, or Bayern Munich, at the end of this season.

However, Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro denied the existence of such a clause but acknowledged that the club would not stand in Alonso’s way if he decides to pursue new opportunities.

While Alonso remains focused on leading Leverkusen to their first-ever Bundesliga title, Liverpool is also considering other potential candidates for the managerial position.

Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim has been linked with the role, but no discussions have taken place between Liverpool and the Portuguese manager.

Other names in the mix include former Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane, Germany’s Julian Nagelsmann, Tottenham Hotspur’s Ange Postecoglou, and Brighton’s Graham Potter.
