Pep Guardiola has expressed uncertainty over whether Erling Haaland will feature in Manchester City’s match against Brentford, as the striker has been offered compassionate leave following the death of a close family friend, Ivar Eggja.

Eggja was affectionately referred to as “uncle” by Haaland and played a crucial role in his life, assisting him during key moments of his career.

Guardiola acknowledged the difficulty of the situation for Haaland and his family, stating, “It’s a tough moment for him and his family. Our thoughts are with him. We will see tomorrow if he is mentally and physically able to play.”

After the announcement of Eggja’s passing, Haaland took to social media to share a heartfelt tribute.

He wrote, “You are a legend, Ivar. Words cannot describe how much you meant to me! Words cannot describe how much you will be missed!”

Eggja was not only a close friend but also played a vital role in Haaland’s professional life, helping him settle when he moved to clubs like Red Bull Salzburg, Borussia Dortmund, and Manchester City.

Haaland credited Eggja with making his transitions easier, allowing him to focus on football.

When Haaland joined City in 2022, Eggja found him an apartment and ensured it was well-prepared, just as he had done for Haaland’s previous club moves.

Haaland once remarked that without Eggja’s help, he wouldn’t have been as successful, recalling how Eggja’s support enabled him to focus on his game and score three goals on his Dortmund debut.
