Spain’s Rodri and Alvaro Morata have each been handed a one-match ban by UEFA for chanting “Gibraltar is Spanish” during Euro 2024 victory celebrations.

The incident occurred in Madrid’s Plaza de Cibeles after Spain’s win over England in the final.

The Gibraltar Football Association condemned the chants as “extremely provocative and insulting” and filed a complaint to UEFA, which subsequently charged the players.

UEFA’s Control, Ethics, and Disciplinary Body ruled that the players violated the principles of conduct and basic rules of decent behavior by using the event for non-sporting manifestations, thus bringing football and UEFA into disrepute.

UEFA emphasized that football should promote peace, understanding, and fair play, free from divisive actions like these chants.

Spain‘s next match is against Serbia in the Nations League next month in which Rodri and Morata will be absent.

Gibraltar, located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, has been a British territory since 1713.

The Gibraltar FA emphasized that UEFA’s ruling sends a clear message against divisive and offensive actions in football.
