In a surprising move, FIFA made a significant change to one of the most iconic football teams in the world – Juventus.
The renowned Italian club were not known as Juventus in the FIFA 20 game. Instead, they were referred to as Piemonte Calcio.
This alteration left fans wondering why FIFA made this decision and what it means for the gaming experience.
Why did FIFA change Juventus name?
The reason behind this change lies in a licensing agreement between Juventus and EA Sports, the creators of FIFA. Due to certain restrictions, EA Sports cannot use the real name of the team in their game.
As a result, they have had to resort to using an alternative name – Piemonte Calcio.
Piemonte Calcio, which literally means ‘Piemonte Football’, is inspired by the region of Italy in which Juventus is based.
The term ‘Piemonte’ refers to the Piedmont region, situated in north-west Italy, near the borders of Switzerland and France.
It translates as ‘At the foot of the Mountains’, paying homage to the area’s stunning Alps backdrop.
This naming convention is not unique to Piemonte Calcio. Several other Italian clubs, such as Brescia Calcio, Cagliari Calcio, and Associazione Calcio Milan (AC Milan), follow a similar style. It is a common practice in Italian football.
Interestingly, in the previous edition of the game, Pro Evolution Soccer 2019, Juventus was known as ‘PM Black and White,’ with ‘PM’ standing for Piemonte. However, in FIFA 20, the Juventus brand is not featured.
Instead, Piemonte Calcio will represent the team. But fear not, Juventus fans who enjoy playing FIFA – the players of the real-life Juventus squad are still present in Piemonte Calcio.
This means you can expect to see stars like Matthijs de Ligt, Aaron Ramsey, and Cristiano Ronaldo in the game.
Despite the name change, Piemonte Calcio closely resembled Juventus in terms of gameplay.
The team was fully incorporated into FIFA 20, appearing in various game modes such as Kick-Off, Ultimate Team, Career Mode, and VOLTA Football.
However, one notable absence was Juventus’ home venue, Allianz Stadium, which did not feature in FIFA 20.
Overall, while the name change took some getting used to, FIFA’s decision to introduce Piemonte Calcio as the alternative name for Juventus is a necessary compromise to ensure the inclusion of the club’s players and maintain the authenticity of the game.
So, Juventus fans embraced the new name and enjoyed playing as Piemonte Calcio in FIFA 20!
