Xabi Alonso, the current manager of Bayer Leverkusen, has hit back at Paul Merson after the former Arsenal icon criticized his decision to stay at the German club instead of pursuing managerial opportunities at Liverpool or Bayern Munich.
Alonso was strongly linked with the vacant managerial position at Liverpool following Jurgen Klopp’s announcement to step down at the end of the season. However, the former Liverpool midfielder opted to remain at Bayer Leverkusen, where he recently secured a surprising Bundesliga title.
Merson expressed his surprise at Alonso’s decision, warning him that the Liverpool and Bayern Munich jobs may not come around again. He also doubted Leverkusen’s chances of retaining the German league title next year.
Responding to Merson’s comments, Alonso told Spanish publication AS, “Paul Merson will have made decisions that I do not value. Mine is this. Everyone is responsible for their own decisions, and I am convinced that staying at Leverkusen is the right one for me. I am enjoying the moment and, of course, I want to continue improving.”
Bayer Leverkusen won the Bundesliga with five matches to spare and currently hold a 13-point lead over perennial champions Bayern Munich. They are also unbeaten across all competitions and will compete in the DFB Pokal final and the Europa League semi-finals in May.
Meanwhile, Liverpool is actively searching for their next manager and has been linked with Sporting CP head coach Ruben Amorim and Roberto De Zerbi as potential candidates.
Julian Nagelsmann, initially considered a contender, has recently signed a new contract to remain as the German national team boss, ruling him out of the running for the Liverpool job.
