Genk chief, Dimitri De Conde, has expressed his disappointment upon learning of top goalscorer Paul Onuachu’s move to Southampton in a deal worth €21m.
The 28-year-old Nigeria international had become a cult figure at the club since joining from FC Midtjylland in 2019, scoring 84 goals in 134 matches and holding the record for most goals scored in a single season of the Belgian league after netting 33 times in 38 outings during the 2020/21 campaign.
Though aware of his desire to progress, De Conde admitted his loss will be keenly felt.
“We could no longer stop him from making his dream come true”, said De Conde “I am pleased that Paul is also grateful to the club for that.
“His departure is of course a great loss for our current selection. We shouldn’t be silly about that. But we were prepared for a possible departure.”
