Spanish police have officially confirmed that “everything is pointing” to Liverpool star Diogo Jota being behind the wheel of the Lamborghini that crashed and killed him and his brother André Silva last week, IsaGoal can report,
In their latest statement, the Civil Guard said Jota may also have been speeding on the A-52 motorway near Zamora, where the crash occurred.
As reported by The Mirror, investigators are still finalising their expert report, but initial findings from tyre skid marks and crash patterns strongly suggest Jota was the driver.
“All the tests carried out for the moment point to the driver of the crash vehicle being Diogo Jota,” the Civil Guard stated. “Everything is also pointing to a possible high excess of speed over the permitted speed on that stretch of the motorway.”
The tragic accident came just days after Jota married his long-time partner Rute Cardoso on June 22.
The couple share three children, the youngest only eight months old.
Liverpool players returned to training on Tuesday, visibly shaken, just 72 hours after attending the funeral.
Mohamed Salah, Andrew Robertson, and new signing Jeremie Frimpong were among those seen arriving at Kirkby.
Salah wrote, “It’s going to be extremely difficult to accept that Diogo won’t be there when we go back.”
Arne Slot called the loss “a shock for all of us,” while Jurgen Klopp, who signed Jota in 2020, added: “There must be a bigger purpose, but I can’t see it.”
Liverpool’s upcoming friendly with Preston may be postponed depending on the players’ wishes.
