Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has criticised Manchester United’s decision to sell Scott McTominay to Napoli, after the midfielder capped a remarkable debut season in Italy by winning the Serie A title and the league’s Most Valuable Player award.
According to BBC Sport, the 28-year-old left Old Trafford last summer in a £25.7 million deal as part of the club’s effort to meet Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). Because McTominay was a homegrown player, his sale counted entirely as profit on the books.
The Scotland international quickly established himself as a key player under Antonio Conte, scoring 13 goals and assisting six times across 39 appearances in all competitions. He scored on the final day in Napoli’s 2-0 win over Cagliari that secured the Scudetto.
McTominay celebrated the trophy win on social media with a post that read:
“Hard work always catches up with perfect timing. CAMPIONI D’ITALIA.”
The midfielder’s stellar form throughout the season earned him the Serie A MVP honour. Speaking after the season finale, McTominay told reporters: “I’m lost for words.”
Former United manager Solskjaer, now at Besiktas, expressed disbelief at the club’s transfer call.
“How you can sell Scott is beyond me,” he said. “Scott and Fred together – they were lads you could count on every day to give 100 per cent.”
Manchester United, meanwhile, endured a historically poor season, finishing 15th in the Premier League—their worst domestic finish since 1974.
Solskjaer added: “Man United is my family and will always be part of me… it is hard to watch because it is your family that is struggling.”
With McTominay now thriving in Serie A and his fee being described by many as a “bargain”, questions will continue to be asked about United’s transfer strategy—especially regarding the sale of players developed in their own academy.
