Mohamed Salah has confirmed that negotiations with Saudi Pro League clubs were “very serious” before he opted to extend his contract with Liverpool FC.

According to a report by NBC Sports, the Egyptian forward admitted last November that he was “more out than in” during the lengthy talks with the Premier League champions. He ultimately signed a contract extension that keeps him at Anfield until 2027.

In an interview aired on Sunday with Egypt’s On Sport TV, Salah addressed the situation directly:

“It was a good opportunity to me, if I hadn’t renewed with Liverpool it would have happened.”

Salah’s decision came after Liverpool clinched the 2024–25 Premier League title — their second since his arrival in 2017 — with the Egyptian claiming the Golden Boot after scoring 29 goals and providing 18 assists. He was also named the Football Writers’ Association (FWA) Men’s Player of the Year for the third time, joining Thierry Henry as the only player to earn the accolade three times.

Despite strong interest from Saudi clubs, Salah credited Liverpool fans for their influence on his final decision.

“Part of the pressure on the club came from the fans. I know from the start that they wanted me to continue, and they played their role in all of this,” Salah added.

Salah Discusses Relationship with New Liverpool Boss Arne Slot

The 32-year-old also offered insights into Liverpool’s managerial transition, comparing the coaching styles of former boss Jürgen Klopp and new head coach Arne Slot.

“Every coach has a different style of play but I talk a lot with Slot and we understand each other very well,” Salah said. “Unlike Klopp, we sit a lot and talk. He was honest with me from the beginning and told me that he wants to get the best out of me and I told him that I want to be comfortable on the pitch.”

Salah praised Klopp’s contributions, stating that the German coach “gave too much to the club and [it] won a lot with him.”

As Liverpool prepares for the upcoming season under Slot’s leadership, Salah’s continued presence will remain vital to their ambitions across domestic and European competitions.
