Real Madrid have confirmed the departure of club legend Raul Gonzalez, who is stepping down as manager of Real Madrid Castilla. The decision marks the end of a six-year spell on the touchline for the former striker, who first returned to the club in 2018.
According to Marca, Raul took his first steps into coaching with Real Madrid’s under-16s before quickly advancing to the under-19s. He won the UEFA Youth League in his opening months and was soon promoted to manage the Castilla team. Across 209 matches, Raul guided the B side to multiple promotion play-offs but ultimately fell short of reaching Segunda Division.
Arbeloa Set to Replace Raul in Castilla Role
Raul’s departure had been widely anticipated within the club. Reports circulated for months suggesting a managerial change was on the horizon. Alvaro Arbeloa, who currently coaches the under-19 side, is expected to take over Castilla duties. Former player Julio Baptista is also set to return to the youth ranks in a coaching capacity.
Real Madrid stated that Raul made the personal decision to leave. The club’s farewell message praised him as a cherished figure:
“Raul will always be in the hearts of every Madridista and Real Madrid will always be his home.”
Disappointment Over First-Team Snub
Raul’s decision appears influenced by recent developments in the first-team coaching setup. Xabi Alonso, another former Madrid player and youth coach, was officially appointed to a senior managerial role — the same position Raul had reportedly aimed for. After being passed over multiple times, he seems ready to seek a new chapter elsewhere.
Raul Eyes Next Step Amid Schalke Links
With his departure now official, attention turns to Raul’s future. German side Schalke, where he played from 2010 to 2012, has been heavily linked with him. While no announcement has been made, a return to Germany may be on the cards as he prepares to leave Spain once again.
In a farewell message posted to social media, Raul wrote:
“A new stage in my life as a manager is beginning, and one day I will be back at the place that will always be my home.”
Raul’s Legacy in the Dugout
Though he didn’t achieve promotion with Castilla, Raul’s commitment to nurturing young talent and maintaining the club’s philosophy has left a lasting impact. His future may lie abroad, but his bond with Real Madrid remains strong.
