French Ligue 1 side Stade Rennais are preparing a summer bid for Super Eagles forward Paul Onuachu, according to reports by Soccernet.ng. The towering striker, currently at Southampton, is attracting strong interest after a productive loan spell in Turkey.
Onuachu, 31, spent the 2023-24 season on loan at Trabzonspor where he scored 15 goals and provided four assists in 21 league matches. Despite this, he returned to Southampton and made 27 appearances last season across competitions, scoring four goals. However, with Southampton relegated to the Championship, Onuachu appears reluctant to stay in England’s second division.
Rennes sees Onuachu as a key option to replace Arnaud Kalimuendo, who is expected to leave the club, according to Foot-Sur7. The French side’s new sporting director, Loïc Désiré, has made the striker a top target as Rennes aims to strengthen their attack for the next season.
Trabzonspor also remains interested in re-signing Onuachu permanently. However, Southampton has stalled talks, rejecting a €5 million offer that included €4.5 million upfront plus €500,000 in add-ons. Southampton is holding out for a higher fee and does not seem in a hurry to sell the Nigerian forward.
Onuachu’s current contract with Southampton runs until 2026, and Transfermarkt values him at about €6 million. Rennes has not yet made a formal offer but is expected to intensify negotiations soon after a challenging season domestically.
The arrival of Loïc Désiré as sporting director at Rennes signals a new approach aimed at qualifying for European competitions next season. Onuachu will be keen to settle his club situation quickly to focus on reviving his international career.
Since 2019, Onuachu has scored three goals in 25 appearances for the Super Eagles. However, the striker has been left out of recent Nigeria squads under coach Eric Chelle, including for the World Cup qualifiers and recent international matches.
As Rennes and Trabzonspor battle for his signature, Onuachu’s future remains uncertain, but he is determined to regain his place on the international stage.
“Onuachu will be eager to resolve his club future quickly as he looks to get his international career back on track.”
