Goals from Ekene Awazie and Chinedu Obasi sealed the victory for the hosts following a Paul Samson equalizer for Abia Warriors.

The thrilling encounter had both teams striving so hard to settle into the game as early as possible but they were still careful and much of the game was played in midfield, with the goalkeepers being less busy.

After a couple of chances from the two sides, Enyimba found a opener in the thirty-fouth minute through a fine finish from Ekene Awazie.

Philip Ozor saw Awazie running into the box and he lobbed the ball to Awazie who chested the ball, turned and fired past Okiemute Odah.

Abia Warriors came close to getting an equalizer in the shortly before the break but Ojo Olorunleke dived to full stretch to deny his former employers a chance to get into the game.

The ‘Oscendo Warriors’ finally got their goal five minutes into the second half through Paul Samson who leaped to connect Njoku Chimezie’s cross and he kicked the ball acrobatically past Ojo Olorunleke.

With both sides even, the intensity of the game increased and Enyimba came close to getting a second goal in the fifty-sixth minute when Chinedu Obasi’s long range freekick was saved by Okiemute Odah.

Gabriel Orok struck the bar in the 71st minute after a swift counter attack from Enyimba

Enyimba’s winner finally came in the 77th minute through Chinedu Obasi. The former Nasarawa United defender unleashed a shot from a long range freekick and Odah got his hand to it but he failed to save the shot and it sailed into the net.

The win means that The People’s Elephants have now won five successive derbies against Abia Warriors.
