Benin Republic manager Gernot Rohr has revealed that forward Rodolfo Aloko is almost certain to miss October’s World Cup qualifying match against Nigeria in Uyo — www.isagoal.com reports.
Aloko, who plays his club football with Croatian side NK Kustosija on loan from Crown Legacy, picked up a meniscus injury during Benin’s 4-0 win over Lesotho on September 9.
Rohr, speaking on Canal 3 Benin, confirmed the setback, saying: “Unfortunately, we have a more serious injury, that of Rodolfo. He has a meniscus injury and needs surgery. He will likely miss the upcoming matches in October.”
The young winger is scheduled for surgery and will be out for several weeks, making him unavailable for Benin’s matches against Rwanda and Nigeria.
Rohr added that the news was hard to take since Aloko had been putting in strong performances and showing rapid improvement with his versatility and energy.
Benin still has a chance to push for qualification, as they could move level on 14 points with Group C leaders South Africa, who face a looming points deduction over an ineligible player incident.
Nigeria meanwhile faces its own injury concerns, with Ola Aina recovering from hamstring surgery and Victor Osimhen racing to regain fitness after an ankle issue.
