The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has swiftly denied reports suggesting that Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle is considering resigning from his position.
According to Premium Times, the rumors emerged following a report by Nigerian journalist Osasu Obayiuwana. He claimed that uncertainty surrounding Nigeria’s FIFA World Cup qualification had caused Chelle to rethink his future.
Mr. Obayiuwana stated, “Eric Chelle is considering terminating his contract as Super Eagles manager. Sources within the NFF say that uncertainty over his fate beyond the FIFA World Cup qualifying series has led to a dramatic change of heart. The NFF will hold a crisis meeting to address the matter.”
The Super Eagles’ World Cup qualification struggles are well-known, as they sit in fourth place in Group C, with just seven points from six matches. This has put pressure on Chelle to secure a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
The rumors quickly gained traction, suggesting that Chelle had traveled to Europe to scout players and was preparing for crisis talks with the NFF. However, the NFF’s head of communication, Ademola Olajire, quickly dismissed these claims, calling them an April Fool’s prank.
Osasu Obayiuwana later confirmed the playful nature of his report, sharing on social media, “15,000 views and quite a few #AprilFoolsDay victims in the bag.”
Fans can now rest assured that Eric Chelle remains fully committed to leading the Super Eagles as they fight to secure their place in the World Cup. His immediate focus remains on improving results in the qualifiers.
