Nathan Tella, forward for Bayer Leverkusen, has firmly denied reports suggesting that he quit the Nigeria national football team. The rumors of his retirement spread after he missed recent Super Eagles call-ups, but sources close to the player confirm that Tella remains committed to representing Nigeria.
According to Allnigeriasoccer.com, Tella missed Nigeria’s World Cup qualifiers in June 2024 and March 2025 due to a family emergency and an injury. A source stated, “Why would Tella reject a call-up? There was a family emergency last year, so he couldn’t attend. And last month, he was injured.”
The 25-year-old committed to Nigeria by playing in a 2026 World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe in November 2023, making him ineligible to represent England, his country of birth, unless Nigeria revokes his citizenship. Despite the recent speculation, Tella has always expressed his desire to play for the Super Eagles, even while eligible for England.
Tella continues to perform well at the club level with Bayer Leverkusen this season. He has started 19 games, contributing 7 goal involvements (4 goals and 3 assists), demonstrating his ongoing importance in the Bundesliga.
