Manchester United are nearing the signing of Wolves forward Matheus Cunha, with talks progressing well. But the Old Trafford club isn’t stopping there.
According to L’Equipe, United are now also targeting Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta. This move comes after Rasmus Hojlund’s underwhelming display in the Europa Conference League final, which ended in defeat to Tottenham.
Cunha’s £62.5 million release clause makes the move relatively straightforward, and despite the Red Devils missing out on European football for next season, the 25-year-old is open to the transfer.
With the squad undergoing major changes and players potentially on the way out, Manchester United’s new leadership under INEOS is reportedly eager to strengthen the front line further. Jean-Philippe Mateta, who scored 17 goals across all competitions last season, is now firmly in their sights.
“United see Mateta as a viable summer target,” the report stated, “especially with Palace needing to make a decision before his contract enters its final year.”
Palace qualified for the Europa League and want to retain their top players to support manager Oliver Glasner in European competition. However, with Mateta’s contract expiring in 2026, the club risks losing him for free if a deal isn’t struck this summer.
Mateta is reportedly keen to impress France boss Didier Deschamps ahead of next year’s World Cup. A high-profile move to Old Trafford could provide the perfect stage.
Even if Palace refuses to sell, United are exploring further options. Reports suggest Liam Delap, Victor Osimhen, and Viktor Gyokeres are also being tracked by Ruben Amorim’s team.
With uncertainty swirling around multiple forwards, it looks to be a busy summer for Manchester United.
