In a thinly veiled dig at Liverpool’s newly appointed manager, Arne Slot, Manchester United’s Erik ten Hag has downplayed the hype surrounding Slot’s Feyenoord team.
Slot, who succeeded Jurgen Klopp at Anfield following Klopp’s departure after a nine-year tenure, has drawn attention for his success at Feyenoord, clinching the league title in the 2022-23 season.
However, Ten Hag isn’t convinced of Slot’s managerial prowess, suggesting that Feyenoord’s performance hasn’t lived up to the hype.
“There’s been an exaggerated enthusiasm surrounding Feyenoord,” remarked the Man United boss, as reported by Voetbal International.
“While they maintained stability this season, they weren’t at the top level. PSV Eindhoven outshone them in every aspect—possession, pressure, intensity, you name it.”
Acknowledging PSV’s dominance under Peter Bosz, Ten Hag praised their comprehensive superiority over the competition.
“Bosz and his team have performed exceptionally,” he noted.
“PSV Eindhoven’s superiority was evident, far surpassing Feyenoord and others.”
Contrasting Feyenoord’s performance with the structural foundation Klopp left at Liverpool, Ten Hag suggested that Slot is stepping into a more advantageous position than he did when joining Manchester United.
“Jurgen and Pep Lijnders have established a solid base,” observed the Dutchman. “Slot inherits a stronger setup than I did at United, both in terms of club structure and squad balance.”
