Liverpool’s pursuit of Florian Wirtz has hit a temporary setback after their second bid, worth €130 million, was not accepted by Bayer Leverkusen, according to The Times.

The Premier League champions have been active early in the transfer window after their title-winning campaign under Arne Slot. With Jeremie Frimpong already secured from Leverkusen and Milos Kerkez reportedly agreeing personal terms, Wirtz remains the next major target in a summer of big moves.

The latest offer from Liverpool included performance-based add-ons, but Leverkusen have yet to agree to the proposal. Journalist Paul Joyce reports that while the offer hasn’t been accepted, it doesn’t mean the transfer is off the table. “The significance of Friday’s bid for the jewel of German football should not be underestimated,” Joyce wrote.

There appears to be cautious optimism from both clubs. Jason Burt of The Daily Telegraph indicated that Leverkusen are satisfied with the overall fee, and negotiations are now focused on the payment structure and the add-ons. These reportedly include achievements such as Champions League qualification and title wins, with the possibility of more lucrative bonuses tied to major competition victories.

Ben Jacobs noted a lingering concern inside Anfield, referring to the “nagging doubt within the Liverpool hierarchy” after last summer’s failed pursuit of Martin Zubimendi. While Liverpool remain confident, they are aware that deals involving such high valuations can become drawn out, especially with rivals monitoring developments.

Despite the delay, Daily Mail reporter Dominic King suggests that “middle ground will be found quickly,” pointing toward ongoing discussions that could lead to an agreement in the coming days.

With Wirtz seen as a generational talent, Liverpool appear determined to get the deal over the line, making it one of the most talked-about transfers of the summer.
