Liverpool star Roberto Firmino has been named among a five-man shortlist by FC Barcelona as Xavi eyes a ‘low-cost’ solution to replacing Memphis Depay.
Since joining from Bundesliga side Hoffenheim in 2015, Firmino has been an important figure for Liverpool, scoring 107 goals in 348 appearances, lifting titles such as Premier League and Champions League with Klopp’s side.
This season however may have seen some decline in results and with the pairing of Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz being signed, Firmino may be at risk of falling down the pecking order if he continues his career with Liverpool beyond this season.
Klopp is eager to keep him at the club long term yet Spanish tabloid Fichajes report that their interest could test Liverpool financials with ‘small amount’ being used to secure the attacker now compared to a potential free transfer in the summer.
Joining Firmino as other viable options are Moussa Dembele, Dries Mertens, Luis Muriel and Goncalo Guedes but for now it appears that Firmino is more interested in continuing his journey with The Reds.
Speaking of his experience thus far he said “It’s incredible playing high-level football here with great players, stars of the game,” continuing “I’m happy here and I intend to stay here and help Liverpool FC.”
