Liverpool Football Club has officially confirmed the appointment of Richard Hughes as their new Sporting Director. Hughes, who previously served as the Technical Director at Bournemouth, will assume his new role on June 1, ahead of the 2024/25 season.

The announcement comes shortly after the news of Jurgen Klopp’s departure from Anfield at the end of the current season.

A Proud Opportunity to Serve Liverpool FC

Expressing his excitement about the new role, Hughes stated, “I am incredibly proud to be offered this opportunity.

Liverpool FC is a unique club, and I’m grateful to be given a chance to serve it in this capacity.”

Hughes also highlighted the club’s rich history, but emphasized his focus on the present and future, particularly the outstanding team led by Klopp and the commitment to developing young players.

Making Good Decisions for Success

Hughes acknowledged the expectations and responsibilities that come with his position, stating, “It will be my job, working with Michael Edwards and the football operations team, to make good decisions that enhance the prospects of having a winning and exciting team.”

He emphasized the importance of Liverpool’s tradition of making smart decisions and the benefits that come with it.

Michael Edwards, Liverpool’s Sporting Director, expressed his delight in having Hughes on board, praising his outstanding judgment and track record of benefiting the organizations he represents.

Edwards and Hughes both acknowledged the weight of responsibility that comes with working for a club like Liverpool, but they are confident in their ability to lead the club into a bright future.

The identity of Klopp’s successor is still unknown, but there are suggestions that the players would like assistant manager Pep Lijnders to take over. The decision of who will fill Klopp’s shoes remains a significant one for a club of Liverpool’s stature.
