Leicester City have confirmed the signing of goalkeeper Alex Smithies on a two-year deal at the King Power Stadium.
The 32-year-old arrives on a free transfer having left Cardiff City over the summer. He joins Leicester after a short spell on trial with Premier League rivals AFC Bournemouth.
Smithies, who has also played for Huddersfield Town and Queens Park Rangers, arrives at Leicester as a third-choice goalkeeper behind Danny Ward and Daniel Iversen.
He is Leicester’s first senior signing of the summer, with a gap opening up in the squad following Kasper Schmeichel’s departure to Ligue 1 side OGC Nice on a three-year deal.
Smithies’ arrival will allow young goalkeeper Jakub Stolarczyk to leave on loan, with League One club previously linked with signing the 21-year-old Poland youth international.
While Smithies is the first senior signing this summer, the club have snapped up former Aston Villa defender Paul Appiah for the under-21 side.
