Is Graham Potter Trying to Reinvigorate Attack for Chelsea Alan Shearer Can't Tell

Alan Shearer has expressed his confusion regarding Graham Potter’s attacking strategy for Chelsea, after their 1-0 loss to struggling Southampton.

Speaking to Match of the Day, the former Premier League legend could not make sense of why leading players such as David Fofana, Kai Havertz, Raheem Sterling and Joao Felix were struggling to break down a resilient home defense.

He highlighted issues among Chelsea’s dazzling array of forward talent as well as Connor Gallagher and noted how this allowed the Saints to get behind the ball too easily.

But despite criticising Potter’s lack of tactical options, Shearer still paid tribute to Southampton’s outstanding defensive performance.

He heaped praise on Ainsley Maitland-Niles in particular for a brilliant block that kept the score at 1-0.

Up next for both clubs: Spurs host Chelsea in an important London derby next Sunday while Southampton travel to Leeds on Saturday in what is sure to be an entertaining relegation battle.
