French national team goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has announced his retirement from international football after over 14 years and 145 caps with France.

The 36-year-old goalie was the captain of Les Bleus in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where they were beaten by Argentina on penalties in the final.

In an interview with L’Equipe, Lloris cited family considerations as the main reasons for his decision to step away and named Milan’s Mike Maignan as a worthy successor.

He stated “I don’t want to make it my own, I’ve always said and repeated that the France team doesn’t belong to anyone, and we all have to make sure that’s the case, me first. I think that behind, the team is ready to continue… There is also a family choice, I feel the need to spend more time with my wife and my children.”
