Nigeria-eligible midfielder Francis Onyeka is nearing a loan move from Bayer Leverkusen to relegated Bundesliga club Bochum ahead of the new season.
According to Soccernet.ng, the 18-year-old attacking midfielder will join Bochum on a season-long loan deal to gain regular first-team experience.
Onyeka has been a standout talent in Bayer Leverkusen’s youth system, having joined the club in 2014. Despite being promoted to the senior squad in recent seasons, competition from Florian Wirtz, Amine Adli, and Jonas Hofmann has limited his game time.
The German-born midfielder made a brief appearance in the UEFA Champions League and also featured in the DFB Pokal. His Champions League debut came when he replaced Florian Wirtz during a group stage match against FC Salzburg in November 2024.
“It’s been difficult for Onyeka to get minutes with players like Wirtz and Hofmann ahead of him, so this loan could give him the breakthrough opportunity he needs,” a source close to Werkself Xtra stated.
Bayer Leverkusen are currently in a transitional phase following the departure of coach Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid and possible exits of several key players. Onyeka’s future had been uncertain, but the loan move to Bochum looks set to be finalized soon.
He still has two years left on his current contract with Bayer Leverkusen. The club could offer him an extension before the loan deal is completed or choose to assess his performance during his time at Bochum.
But Who is Francis Onyeka?
Francis Onyeka, 18, is a left-footed attacking midfielder known for his vision and creativity. He was born in Germany to Nigerian parents, making him eligible to represent both countries internationally.
Although he has represented Germany at youth level—including the Under-15, U-16, U-17, and U-18 teams—he has yet to make a senior appearance and remains eligible to switch allegiance to Nigeria.
Despite sharing the same surname, he has no relation to Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka.
With the move to Bochum almost confirmed, Onyeka will be hoping to prove himself in Germany’s second tier and potentially earn a permanent spot in Bayer Leverkusen’s senior squad in the near future.
