Former Super Eagles Technical Adviser, Jo Bonfrere, has expressed his support for Emmanuel Amunike to become the head coach of the Nigerian men’s national team.
The position is currently vacant following the departure of Jose Peseiro, who led Nigeria to a runner-up spot at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Amunike, a former Barcelona winger and 1994 Africa Player of the Year, has already submitted his application to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for consideration.
With an impressive CV as both a player and coach, including winning titles in Egypt, Portugal, and Spain, Amunike is believed to be one of the favorites for the role.
Bonfrere, who worked with Amunike during the 1996 Olympic Games where Nigeria won the football gold medal, believes that Amunike has the qualities needed to lead the Super Eagles.
He emphasized the importance of having a local coach and expressed his willingness to provide technical support to Amunike if needed.
Having led the Golden Eaglets to victory in the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup and guided the Tanzanian national team to the 2019 AFCON, Amunike has proven his capabilities as a coach.
Bonfrere believes that with Amunike at the helm, Nigerian football can reach new heights.
The NFF is currently accepting applications from interested coaches for the head coach position.
While the decision ultimately rests with the football body, Bonfrere’s endorsement adds weight to Amunike’s candidacy.
