France manager Didier Deschamps has echoed Carlo Ancelotti’s view on Kylian Mbappe’s best position, stating the Real Madrid striker is most effective playing as a centre forward.
According to a report by Madrid Universal, Deschamps made this clear ahead of France’s Nations League third-place clash against Germany. Speaking at a pre-match press conference, he said, “It’s no coincidence he finished as Europe’s top scorer; no one has scored more than him… I believe his best position is up front as the number 9.”
Mbappe Embraces His Centre Forward Role
Mbappe, who once preferred playing on the wing, is now adapting to the number 9 position. Though he initially resisted the switch, he has gradually adjusted under Ancelotti’s system at Real Madrid.
“Being the number 9 for club and national team isn’t the same,” Mbappe admitted. “But I think I’ve made progress. I’m starting to get used to the position.”
This season, Mbappe has scored 42 goals for Los Blancos, consistently playing as a centre forward while Vinicius Jr. held the left wing. The role change appears to be paying off.
Deschamps, Mbappe on the Same Page
For Deschamps, Mbappe’s adjustment is a strategic asset for France. With Olivier Giroud nearing the end of his international career, Deschamps seems prepared to hand the number 9 role to the 26-year-old.
Once known for cutting in from the left with PSG, Mbappe now plays in a central role that demands more physicality and positional discipline. The shift has proven successful, not just at club level, but increasingly for the national team as well.
Real Madrid System Shapes New Mbappe
Ancelotti’s consistent use of Mbappe through the middle has influenced France’s tactical setup. Deschamps has embraced this evolution, finding alignment with the Real Madrid manager’s vision.
With France set to face Germany in the Nations League, all eyes will be on how Mbappe performs in his refined role. His development into a full-time striker is no longer just a club decision—it’s becoming a national strategy.
